Run to the glacier world of Grindelwald
Today, Grindelwald is undoubtely the trail running centre of the Jungfrau region, if not of Switzerland. It offers countless marked trails for beginners and also for the most concerning mountain and trail runners. Grindelwald is also home of the Eiger Ultra Trail and the new Mountainrun Grindelwald.
Not so long ago, Grindelwald was known to its tourists simply as the "Glacier Village" The upper and lower Grindelwald glaciers reaching almost to the valley floor and easily accessible by tourists wearing sandals and fashion shoes. These days, it is difficult to even see the glaciers from the village itself.
This tour to the Schreckhornhütte is for the more experienced runners and requires the confidence to tackle a couple trail sections of more technical nature. But for your efforts you will be rewarded greatly in this spectacular glacier world of Grindelwald, hidden for the average tourist.
As of many of my local tours, we start and finish at the Hotel Wetterhorn. An option would be to take the cable car to Pfingstegg and safe a few vertical meters.
The trail is in large parts quite runnable right up to Bäregg mountain hostel and beyond. However, from Bäregg onwards the trail is marked blue and white.
Once we reach the "Bänisegg", the two 4000m peaks of the Schreckhorn and Lauteraarhorn appear in front of us. To your right, the "Unders Ischmeer" glacier with its jagged spikes ist almost near enough to touch. A very technical section secured with ladders and chains has to be negotiated carefully. After that the going is easier again and soon enough we reach the Schreckhornhütte. Here a well earned rest is called for.
Whilst eating a delicous piece of apricot pie, you can marvel at the towering mountains and the expanse of the " Obers Ischmeer" glacier.
The return requires concentration and care in the technical section. But once the chains and ladders are behind you, you can open up and fly back towards Bäregg and then Pfingstegg. The last bit back we stride out below the sheer wall of the Mettenberg on the trail that will return us to the Hotel Wetterhorn.
