START : Grindelwald,
HIGHEST POINT: 2890 m
MAP: Wildgärst Round
From the Hotel Wetterhorn in Grindelwald to the Wildgärst
This is a trail run with flowing sections and hard long speed hiking. But it is rewarded with fantastic views over Grindewald, the majestic mountains of the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
From the Wildgärst, you can see as far as the Jura mountain range as well as the lakes of Thun and Brienz, just nestling below us. Looking north-east, the lakes of Lungern and Sarnen shimmer in the sun light and glimpses of the lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) are visible on a clear day.
We start at the Hotel Wetterhorn and head up towards the Wittegg. After a short downhill, take the climb on a well maintained but steep single trail up to Waldspitz. This is also a section of the Mountainrun Grindelwald. From Waldspitz the trail is heading west towards Alp Spillmatte. Another climb just short of 500 m vertical awaits us up to 'Spitzen'. From there it is only a short distance to the famous Bachalpsee. Often, teaming with tourists, you still should be able to take a picture to remember. After crossing the 'tourist highway' you are now heading on single trails to the Hiendertellti. Very few hikers venture to this rather hidden rugged valley. On a runnable single trail you go past the Hagelseewli and a little bit further on, the Häxeseewli (witches lake) and soon after we reach the col of 'Wart'. Here, you have the option to take the short, out and back climb up to the Wildgärst. This, I is highly recommended! On a beautiful day the views are far and wide.
A longish 7km downhill back to Grosse Scheidegg awaits the weary joints and muscles. But, once you reach Gr. Scheidegg there is the option to save your legs and take the bus back to the Hotel Wetterhorn or Grindelwald village.
Tip: This is an all day trail run and speed hike. Start early and stop at Waldspitz for coffee or breakfast. There will not be another opportunity until you reach Grosse Scheidegg. Take a picnic with you and plenty of water.
