"The mountains are calling and I must go"
FROM THE ROADS OF ENGLAND TO THE EPIC TRAILS OF SWITZERLAND
From growing up in the magic mountain world of Grindelwald suddenly moving to the seaside town of Bournemouth was quite a change of scenery and life.
But it was there, where my passion for trail running began.
The reason that I chose running, was that I needed something to get me fit and my sport to fit around my work. Self-employed and having a family does not lend itself to a lot of free time. And running is not something that requires great skills.
So one day, I think it was around 1989, I started running.
At the beginning, it was not far, I managed about 3 km along the River Stour and back home. But soon, I found myself entering my first 10k race.
In those days, the running scene was very much dominated by clubs....mostly very competitve clubs...with names ending in AC or Runners or Harriers. To me, these where quite scary.
After finishing my first 10k race in a very reasonable around 38 minutes, I approached a lady from a club called Boscombe Joggers. A much less scary club name! But to my embarrassment, she politely informed me that this was a ladies club only.
All was not lost, a recently founded Club called Littledown Harriers was just around the corner. It existed at the time of about 10 members . I decided to join. From there onwards my running ambitions changed rapidly from just getting fit to very competitive.
But, what the club offered me was much more than getting fit and competitive. It gave me a new lease of life as well as social interactions which I have not experienced before. I also discovered in a very short time that running with this club just 2 or 3 times a week was for me the perfect 'relaxation' in my hectic working and family life.
About 12 years ago, I gave up the roads and changed to mainly running off road on the trails. Quite often on the beautiful coastal paths in the Southwest of England. And then at the end of 2010 I moved with Suz to the French Pyrénées.
There I joined the Trail running club Séméac Olympique.
I came to realise at this time more than any other time, that my heart belonged really to the mountains rather than the sea.
At the end of 2016, I returned back to my roots in Grindelwald.
Since then, I have been discovering for the first time the joy and beauty of trail running in Switzerland.
It is these experiences that formed the idea of letting you join me on my travels and get inspired.
Or even better, come and see for yourself and join me on my Tours.
